O my God! Thou art the Sovereign, the Inaccessible in the kingdom of might and majesty, and the King, the Exalted in the kingdom of power and beauty. Thou hast created naught in existence save two trees: the Tree of Negation and the Tree of Affirmation. Thou hast made Negation the manifestation of “no god” and Affirmation the manifestation of “but God.” Thou hast made Negation Thy fire for those who enter therein, and Affirmation Thy paradise for those who enter therein. The former ever descendeth to the depths below, while the latter ascendeth to the heights above. I beseech Thee therefore, O my God, by Thy Self—for none is equal to Thee, nor is there any peer, likeness, companion or similitude unto Thee—to protect me from the Tree of Negation through all Thy protection.
I take refuge in Thee, and beseech Thee to grant me, through all Thy mercy, the Tree of Affirmation, for this one possesses but few days of fleeting enjoyment, after which his remembrance and all he owned shall perish, leaving upon him trials and torment. But this, Thy sovereignty, endures from one Manifestation unto the dawning-place of Thy next Manifestation, and there is no end to what Thou hast bestowed. I see naught in the fire and those who seek its shade save lack of understanding, for they are not content with numbered days and the extinction of themselves and all that is attributed to them in the eternity of eternities and the glory of pre-existence. Therefore, O my God, comprehend through Thy mercy all Thy servants, for they are weak, looking toward that which profiteth them not, and their eyes behold the fire in what they have possessed for numbered days.
By Thy glory! I see not in it, nor in these people, the weight of a mustard seed before Thee, for the extent of their knowledge is bounded by extinction and nothingness. And I see no abasement for those who seek shelter beneath the Tree of Thy Affirmation, even should they be martyred in Thy path, for their connection is joined to Thy eternal sovereignty, which endureth without end.
Glorified art Thou! How exalted is Thy power! It is as though Thou didst not create in the fire and its people any understanding by which they might show mercy unto themselves, even after Thy proof was completed against it and those within it. And it is as though Thou didst not create in the Manifestations of Thy Affirmation any understanding save this: that they are content with martyrdom and care not for it, and glory in this throughout the kingdoms of the heavens and earth and whatsoever lieth between them, due to their connection with the cord of Thy power and their relation to the Sovereign of Thine eternity.
How remote is the fire and its people! How near is Paradise and its people! I seek refuge in Thee, O my God, from negation and all that pertaineth unto it, and I beseech Thee of Thy grace concerning Paradise and all that pertaineth unto it. There is no power nor strength save in Thee, and Thou art, in truth, the All-Knowing.
