BB00580: Letter to Mulla Hasan Bajistani
In the Name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate
O thou who asketh! Know that God does not decree illness for any soul except for what their own hands have earned of transgressions, and this serves only as atonement for their sins.
As for thy question regarding certain conduct—work purely for God’s sake and see thyself in no state save that of finding thyself in obedience to the All-Merciful. And take account of thyself as though thou art standing before the Balance, hair by hair and shell by shell.
Deprive not thyself of the portion of striving, for hearts become ill just as bodies become ill. Therefore, purify thy heart through remembrance of God the Most Great in every condition. And the greatest spiritual discipline in this regard is that thy heart not be heedless of God’s remembrance for a single moment.
Guard the mystery of the Gate as thou wouldst guard thine eyes. And all things rest with God, for verily God is All-Seeing over His servants. And praise be to God, the Lord of all worlds.
