BB00050: Sahifiy-i-Mukhtasar
Part 1: “Praise be to God Who guideth whom He…”
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Praise be to God Who guideth whom He willeth and leadeth astray whom He willeth. Glorified and exalted be He above what they associate with Him.
O my God! Thou art He Who brought all created things into being from nothing by Thy command. Then didst Thou make known unto them the path of Thy Cause and the stations of Thy prohibition, lest anyone be veiled from the countenance of Thy presence by anything, seeing Thee manifest in all things. O my God! There is no remembrance but Thine, that I might remember Thee, and no honor save in obedience to Thee, that I might turn unto it. Nay, by Thy glory! Every mention through the sovereign power of Thy Will hath been mentioned before Thee, and every existent thing, through mention of the existence of Thy Will, hath withered in Thy dominion. There is no glory for anyone except in obedience to Thee, and no abasement save in disobedience to Thee.
Glorified art Thou! Glorified art Thou! Thee do we recognize and Thee do we unify, after having become certain that Thy Essence transcendeth all essences beyond recognition and proof, and that Thy Identity is severed from all material things beyond description and means. For without nearness to Thee there is no life in Thy creation, and without love for Thee there is no obedience to Thy Book.
I beseech Thee, O God, by the might of Thy Self-Subsistence and the greatness of Thy Grandeur, to send Thy blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Manifestations of Thy Eternality and the Dawning-Places of Thy Mercy, by virtue of what Thou art in the glory of Being, the attribute of Essence, the description of Identity, the majesty of Eternity, and the holiness of Self, and by virtue of what Thou createst in the effulgences of the Divine Realm in the present time, the manifestations of the Kingdom before time, and the conditions of sovereignty and dominion after time, and by what Thy knowledge hath encompassed of the breaths of Thy holiness and the stations of Thy Cause which no knowledge of any servant can encompass and which cannot be mentioned in written records due to the loftiness of the station of creation, through Thy grace and bounty, O Lord of the heavens and earth, and God of all creation!
O my God! How can I call upon Thee when my remembrance hath become a veil between me and the countenance of Thy face? And how can I not call upon Thee when Thy attraction rendeth asunder the veils and bringeth the servant to the station of the manifestation of Thy revelation? O my God! Grant me such a state that I may not be content save with Thy love and Thy good-pleasure, and may not grieve save through Thy displeasure and disobedience to Thee. For I have no power over this after my knowledge of Thy overwhelming power and justice, then Thy might and vengeance. For if Thou shouldst will by the decree of justice, all who dwell in the kingdoms of the heavens and earth would perish in an instant from Thy sovereignty. But since Thy custom is grace and beneficence, and Thy way is pardon and favor, Thou judgest each according to what their hands have earned, that they might be delivered from the darkness of turning away and might willingly be content with Thy countenance and standing before Thee.
Glorified art Thou, O my God! Thou knowest my secret and my public self. I love naught except what Thou lovest, as Thou lovest. I beseech Thee by Thy bounty to make me one of Thy sincere servants who have recognized Thy truth and have turned away from all else because of Thy prohibition, and who have become firm upon the carpet of Thy nearness and pleasure, and have found delight in Thy remembrance and praise. They have sought forgiveness for all that Thy knowledge encompasseth and that which Thou abhorrest in Thy Book and that which Thou lovest not for any of Thy servants. They have submitted to Thy commandments and have manifested the spiritual virtues among Thy servants—those servants whose obedience Thou hast linked to obedience unto Thee, and whose disobedience Thou hast linked to disobedience unto Thee, through Thy grace and bounty, O Most Generous of the generous ones!
O my God! How can I mention my tribulations before Thee when Thou art the One Who sent them down? Though I have been patient in Thy path and have heard words of disbelief from Thy servants, Thou didst hear from the Christians what Thou didst hear, then from the Jews what Thou didst hear, then from the Arabs what Thou didst hear. Yet after that Thou didst not hasten in their judgment until the Hour came upon them suddenly and seized them for what their hands had wrought, as recompense for their unbelief. I am content with what Thou dost patiently endure and do, and I desire naught save what Thou desirest. In the station of my contentment I say: Praise be to God, the Lord of the worlds.
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Glory be to Him Who knoweth what is in the heavens and the earth, and Who judgeth between all things with truth. Glorified and exalted is He above what they associate with Him! O my God! Since I know there is no way for me to know Thy Self and praise Thy Essence except through what Thou hast revealed in Thy Book and ordained in Thy verses, I therefore praise the Beauty of Thy Presence, and the Pure Essence in Thy Prophet, and the Camphor Spring in Thy Chosen One, according to what Thou hast permitted Thy servants and manifested unto me through Thy creation, and inspired me in the kingdom of Thy heaven and earth, and what Thou lovest and art pleased with.
I testify that there is no God but Thee, alone with no partner. Thou hast ever been without the existence of aught besides Thee, and Thou wilt ever be as Thou wast in the eternity of eternities. None can know Thy Essence save Thyself, nor can any but Thee comprehend Thy Oneness, for the highest abstractions of creation point to differentiation, and the ultimate realities of invention testify to division. Thou art the Ancient, the All-Knowing. And I testify that Muhammad, peace be upon him and his family, was the Manifestation of Thy Beauty and the Garment of Thy Countenance, and the first of Thy creation and the mystery of Thy invention, whom Thou didst choose from the midst of pre-existence above all nations, and didst select before the mention of nothingness for the station of Thy manifestation upon the most enduring throne—the foremost Prophet and the honored Chosen One, whom Thou didst extract from the essence of the oil of the leaf of creation, and didst make him the station of Thyself in expression, for Thou hast ever been and wilt ever be beyond association with beginning and destiny, praise and execution.
Thou art the Great, the Most Exalted. And I bear witness to the branches and leaves of the Divine Tree according to what God hath ordained for them in the knowledge of the Unseen, which none knoweth save Him, and He witnesseth all things, and He is the Mighty, the Bestower.
In the Name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate
Praise be to God Who bestoweth His remembrance in the Book upon whomsoever He willeth among His servants. Glorified and exalted be He above all that they attribute unto Him.
O my God! Thou art He Who hath revealed Thyself to all created things through Thy creation, and hath made known unto them the path of obedience to Thee through Thy signs, that all might submit to Thy decree.
O God! Thou art the Single, the One, Whom nothing can describe and no servant can know, for Thine Essence hath ever been beyond the reach of signs to indicate through similitudes, and Thy Being shall forever remain beyond the power of symbols to prove through evidence. If I say “Thou art Thou,” then similitudes would tell of likenesses, yet Thou canst never be known through these. And if I say “He is He,” then would Oneness point to the Essence of creation and Unity to the Reality of invention, though these in their very nature can only point through negation and can only be described through denial.
Wherefore glorified, glorified art Thou! I seek Thy forgiveness for what I have said and say. And I say thereafter and beseech Thee to transform all that Thy knowledge encompasseth of me into that which befitteth Thy Self and that which characterized Thy station of majesty and glory, grandeur and beauty, might and grace, power and beneficence, through Thy favor and Thy generosity, O Thou Who art the Lord of bounty and bestowal, O Thou Who art the Lord of mercy and grandeur, O Thou Who art the Lord of grace and glory, justice and praise, for verily Thou art God, the Most Great, the Most High!
O my God! Thou knowest my station in what Thou hast bestowed upon me according to Thy will in Thy knowledge. I have spoken unto the people by Thy leave, yet they have invented falsehoods against me in following their desires. Thou indeed dost bear witness that I am innocent of that which they invent in their ignorance.
In the Name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate
Praise be to God Who strengtheneth whom He willeth through His aid, and destroyeth those who wrong their own souls; then shall all be gathered unto God on the Day of Judgment. O God! Thou art the One, the Self-Subsisting Lord, Whom no description of anything can encompass, nor any attribute of anything define, for all else besides Thy Essence is bounded by the limits of creation and characterized by the attributes of invention. Thou art far more exalted than to be described through Thy creation or to be indicated through Thy handiwork. Glorified and exalted art Thou above what they describe!
O God! I beseech Thee on this day of the month of Ramadan, wherein Thou didst reveal the Qur’an and didst make its fast obligatory upon all who seek Thy good-pleasure and fear Thy justice, and wherein Thou hast ordained a Night whose worth no book can reckon, and which Thou hast, through Thy bounty, made better than a thousand months. O God! Deprive me not of its breezes, nor of its blessings, and preserve me from following vain desires in the obligations of Thy laws and from heedlessness of Thy manifestations at all times. Strengthen me through divine essences, heavenly realities, angelic souls, celestial beings, paradisiacal attributes, sublime appearances, wondrous revelations, and all that Thy knowledge encompasseth and Thy Book recordeth. Verily, Thou art the Mighty, the Most High!
O God! I bear witness before Thee and before those who bear witness in Thy presence that I am Thy servant who hath never claimed Vicegerency nor its sisters, nor Divine Revelation nor the Qur’an in the manner Thou didst ordain for Thy beloved Muhammad, peace be upon him and his family. Neither have I followed the base desires of men nor contradicted the ordinances of the Furqan. Sufficient art Thou as witness and helper, and sufficient art Thou as guardian for the believers.
O God! Thou knowest the treachery of eyes and what people’s hands have earned in Thy days, as if they had never read Thy Book, nor acted according to Thy laws, nor feared Thy justice. Thou didst say—and Thy word is the truth—“We inspired them to do good deeds.” Then Thou didst say—and Thy promise is the truth—“Fear God and He will grant you a criterion,” and there is no doubt that Thy promise shall be fulfilled.
O God! When Thou didst honor me with that station, all suspected and denied, not knowing nor understanding. O God! Thou knowest their station and art aware of their deeds, and nothing escapeth Thy knowledge. Verily, Thou art the All-Powerful, the Compeller, the Subduer, the Mighty, the All-Knowing.
O God! I know that Thou dost not hasten in their judgment that they might increase in sin, for only those who fear loss make haste. Thou hast ever been mighty in what Thou willest, and none can reverse Thy judgment. Verily, Thou art the Mighty, the Wise.
O my God! I beseech Thee to vouchsafe unto me the light of detachment and the wisdom of exultation, that I may forget every goodly thing save Thee, and arise before the City of Thy hallowed, self-sufficient sanctity, and say: I bear witness that there is none other God but Thee, alone, without partner. Thine is the creation and from Thee is the command. Glorified art Thou, exalted far above that which they impute unto Thee.
I bear witness that Muhammad is Thy servant, whom Thou didst choose out of the bosom of pre-eternity above all nations, and whom Thou didst elect to stand in Thy station for origination and invention; for Thou hast ever been, and shalt forever be, immeasurably exalted above conjunction with the making of existents or the bringing forth of possibles. And Thou, as Thou hast spoken—and Thy word is the truth—in Thy praise:
“No vision taketh in Him, but He taketh in all vision; He is the Subtle, the All-Informed.”
And I bear witness, concerning the trustees of Thy Messenger—Thy blessings be upon them—unto that which Thou hast ordained for them in the knowledge of the unseen, short of the Letter which Thou didst exclusively bestow upon Thy Beloved—may the blessings of God be upon him and his kindred—in the station of prophethood. Undoubtedly were they the pillars of Thy oneness, the signs of Thy hallowing, the tokens of Thy glorification, and the manifestations of Thy operation—on a Day when none was mentioned but they. Verily, they are Thy honoured servants who outstrip Thee not in speech, and by Thy command do they act.
I bear witness, moreover, unto every truth with that whereunto Thou Thyself dost bear witness, then dost love and approve; and against every falsehood with that which Thy Book doth enumerate, then dost abhor and forbid.
And I say: Glorified be God, the Lord of the Throne, above that which they ascribe unto Him! And peace be upon the Messengers; and praise be to God, the Lord of all the worlds.
In the Name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate
Praise be to God Who forgiveth whom He willeth and chastiseth whom He willeth. Glory be to Him! He knoweth what descendeth from heaven and what occureth in the earth and that wherein men differ. O my God! When I know that Thy praise of Muhammad and his family is ever renewed through the manifestation of Thy creation, I venture to praise them before Thee, though I am certain that my existence is as nothingness before their station, let alone my praise before the loftiness of their glory and the greatness of their state. Yet there is no mention like the mention of an ant of themselves. Glory be to Thee and exalted art Thou! Thou knowest their excellence and art able to praise them. There is no God but Thee! Glory be to Thee above what they describe.
O God! Praise Muhammad and the family of Muhammad through what Thou possesseth of the effulgences of the Divine Essence, the manifestations of the Realm of Power, and the conditions of the Kingdom, and through what Thou art able to achieve of the station of unity, glory, grandeur, praise, might, sublimity, majesty, origination, grace, execution, and what Thy knowledge encompasseth in the world of creation. Verily, Thou art God, the Great, the Bestower.
O God! Bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad in the tidings of the ancients, the glad-tidings of those who came before, the justice of those who fear, and the grace of those who are near. O God! Bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad by the light of Thy countenance in Seir, the manifestation of Thy revelation on Mount Paran, the signs of Thy power in the land of Egypt, and the appearances of Thy Will in Beer-sheba, through Thy favor and Thy bounty, O God of the worlds.
O God! Bless and grant peace upon Muhammad and his family at their resting places for all eternity through Thy signs in the dome of time, Thy evidences in the Tree of Utterance, and Thy light in the pillar of fire above the Ark of the Covenant, through Thy mercy, O Lord of the worlds.
In the Name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate
He Who guideth whom He willeth to a straight path. O God! Thou art God, the Creator of all things. There is no God but Thee. I have known Thee through what Thou hast revealed to me through Thy creation, and I have thanked Thee for what Thou hast bestowed upon me through Thy bounties. Thou art He Whose essence cannot be described and Whose ailment cannot be known, for the essence of Thy Being separateth all existence from knowledge, and the manifestation of Thy Identity severeth all contingent things from the mention of expression. Glory be to Thee! Glory be to Thee! Forever hath the description of Thy Essence been Thine Essence, and the attribute of Thy Self been Thy Self, for naught besides Thee existed at Thy level nor was mentioned with Thee.
Verily, Thou hast brought into being all that Thou willeth, as Thou willeth, through what Thou willeth, from nothing, by Thy creation, and Thou dost ever sustain all that Thou hast created through Thy grace, even as Thou didst bring them into being through Thy bounty. All praise be unto Thee for having made known unto me the stations of Thy Cause and the abodes wherein Thy wisdom is manifest unto Thy servants who desire naught except by Thy command and judge not except by Thy leave—the Imams of religion, the pillars of the faithful, and the guides of all creation. O my God! I bear witness unto Thy Being, even as Thou didst bear witness unto Thyself before all things, that Thou art God, there is none other God but Thee, the Lord of all created things.
Part 2: “In the Name of God, the Crusher…”
In the Name of God, the Crusher of tyrants, the Destroyer of transgressors, and the God of all creation! O Lord! None can reverse Thy judgment, none can alter Thy command, none can frustrate Thy words, and none can exhaust Thy signs. I beseech Thee, O Lord, by Muhammad and his family—the Manifestations of Thy divine essence, the stations of the glory of Thy being, the signs of the might of Thy eternality, and the tokens of the sanctity of Thy oneness—to bless the family of God in accordance with Thy station of divinity, grandeur, magnificence and might, and to ordain for us in this night of Thy Greatest Month that which befits Thy bounty. Verily, Thou art God, the Generous, the Bestower.
In the Name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate
Praise be to God Who created what is in the heavens and what is in the earth by His command. Then those who believe in God and His signs shall be gathered unto God. O God! Thou art my God and my Lord. Thou didst create me when I was nothing, and by Thy grace Thou didst provide for me after I had been mentioned. How can I call upon Thee when Thy essence cuts me off from utterance at the moment of recognition? And how can I not call upon Thee when the reality of Thy manifestation in my heart cannot rest without the presence of Thy countenance, O Bestower, O Judge? By Thy might! Even after the way is blocked and the path barred, I will call upon Thee and declare Thy oneness, though I know with certainty that my prayer returns only with despair and my declaration of unity is raised only in separation.
For my desire from Thee is none other than Thee, and this is impossible for creation, since none but Thee can know Thee, and none but Thee can find Thee. Similarly is the judgment regarding my declaration of Thy unity, for unity between two things is impossible, as Thou hast ever been existing, while I shall ever cease to be, just as before my existence I was nothing before Thee.
Alas! Alas! By the might of Thy essence, if Thou wert to take all that Thy knowledge encompasses and of which Thou art capable, and make it the substance of my body, then make it the fire of my secret and manifest being, and extend it for all eternity as punishment for my declaration of Thy unity, Thou wouldst be praiseworthy in Thy deed and obeyed in Thy judgment. Indeed, I would deserve this and all that Thy knowledge encompasses, save Thy essence, and I would praise Thee alone—there is no God but Thee. And verily, through this deservingness, I am certain that One such as Thee, the Generous, would not be satisfied with anything for me except Thy grace and good-pleasure. Now, in the gardens of Thy sanctity, in Thy paradise, I am blessed by Thy bounties, and nothing in the heavens or the earth grieves me, by Thy grace, for Thou art the Generous, the Noble.
In the Name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate
Praise be to God Who sends down His command upon whomsoever He willeth among His servants according to a prescribed term. O God! How can I not cry out before Thee when my sins have encompassed me from every direction? And how can I not calm my soul when I witness Thy treatment of the believers with forgiveness, and know Thy way with the unitarians through beneficence, and with the eager ones through grace? Far be it from thinking of Thee otherwise, for when Thou dost not wish the appearance of Thy Manifestation in forgiveness, Thou dost not execute the decree with implementation.
Glorified art Thou! Glorified art Thou! My circumstances have rendered me unable to mention my transgressions before Thee, and my ultimate state has silenced me from mentioning my destructive deeds before Thy omnipotence. For if I say “Thou art Thou” or seek Thy forgiveness by virtue of who Thou art, or turn to Thee in repentance by virtue of who Thou art, I have already committed another sin, for my very existence is a sin—how then can the consequences thereof be judged? Nay, by Thy might! I have no cause for forgiveness before Thee, for just as Thou didst create me without any merit or cause on my part, likewise do Thou pardon me and forgive me and admit me into the court of Thy nearness, that I may delight in gazing upon the countenance of Thy manifestation and dwell there before the throne of Thy Self-Subsistence, and declare: “Thou art God, there is no God but Thee, alone with no partner.
I have known Thee through Thyself and worshipped Thee through Thy Face, and were it not for Thee, I would be nothing, not even able to say ʿI know not what Thou art.”’ Glory be unto Thee! Here am I, casting myself before Thee, seeking intercession through Muhammad and his family—Thy blessings be upon them—fleeing from Thee unto Thee. Bestow upon me through Thy grace and have mercy upon me through Thy mercy, for I declare: “There is no God but Thee, glory be unto Thee, I have been among the wrongdoers.”
In the Name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate
Glory be to Him Who hath sent down the verses in the Book for a people who act with justice. O my God! Thou art He Who hath commanded with an authority that none other than Thee can command, and forbidden what none other than Thee can forbid, and art pleased with good deeds with which none other than Thee can be pleased. I beseech Thee, O God, by Thy truth, to draw our hearts to the court of Thy nearness, our souls to the station of Thy manifestation, and our bodies to the place of Thy bounty, and make us among those who come unto Thee, who are pleased with Thee, who seek after Thee, and who trust in Thee, through Thy grace and favor. Verily Thou art God, the Beloved of the mystics and the God of all creation.
O God! I bear witness on this tenth day of the Greatest Month, wherein Thou didst reveal the Qur’an and made one of its nights better than a thousand months when Thou didst ordain therein the mystery of days according to what Thou didst prescribe for the believers in the Qur’an, that Thou art God, there is no God but Thee, alone with no partner. Thou hast ever been, while naught existed besides Thee, and Thou wilt ever be as Thou wert, with nothing existing at Thy level, for the essence of creation declareth the path barred, and the reality of invention testifieth that the way is blocked. Thou hast ever been too exalted to be described by other than Thyself or to be known through any but Thee.
Thou art God, the Mighty, the Bestower. And I bear witness to Muhammad—God’s blessings be upon him and his family, and the family of God, peace be upon them—according to what Thou hast ordained for them in the knowledge of the unseen and decreed for them in the primal word. Verily Thou art the Great, the Exalted. I beseech Thee, O God, by their right, to ordain for us the pilgrimage to Thy House and annihilation before the sacred realm of Thy mercy in the land of the Sacred Monument and the Station, and all the blessings Your knowledge encompasses in the land of Arafat, through Your favor and bounty, O Most Merciful of those who show mercy. And I say: Praise be to God, the Lord of all the worlds.
On the Night of Mid-Ramaḍan (the Most Great Month)
In the Name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate
Praise be to God, Who sendeth down the Command at every season unto a people that understand. O my God! Thou art He Who hath decreed for every thing what Thou hast willed, and hast bestowed upon all that which Thou hast ordained. None can turn back Thy command, nor can any man gainsay Thy judgment. Ever hast Thou favored me through Thy loving-kindness and honored me with Thy bounties. Thou didst create me when I was a thing forgotten, and, by Thy grace, didst sustain me after Thou hadst drawn me nigh through Thy remembrance. How, then, shall I render Thee thanks, O my God, whilst Thou hast ever been exalted above being described by Thy creatures? And how shall I not laud the rising of the court of Thy Self-Subsistence, while Thou didst create me for the mention of Thy power, the praise of Thy Will, the splendor of Thy bounty, and the celebration of the sheen of the holiness of Thy mercy?
Glorified art Thou, glorified art Thou! Ever hast Thou been the Remembrer of Thine own Self by Thine own Self, and the Unifier of Thy very Essence by Thy very Essence; for whatsoever is other than Thee is powerless to apprehend the reality of Thy Ipseity, or to affirm the oneness of the identity of Thy Being. The sanctity of the awe of Thy majesty hath cut off the essences of all things from the mention of drawing nigh unto the court of the glory of beauty and majesty; and the inmost reality of the rising of Thy Self-Subsistence hath sundered all existences from the station of certitude and recognition before the Midian of the power of the All-Exalted.
Glorified art Thou! By Thy might, I long to ascend unto Thee; yet how shall I complain, when I find no guide and behold no path? Ah, alas! After my despair of truly affirming Thy unity, and my remoteness from the court of Thy nearness, I call upon Thee with my whole being, that Thou art God, the Lord of the heavens and the earth. The pillars of all things hath the light of Thy Countenance and the splendor of Thy rising filled, so that none beholdeth an existent thing but he seeth Thee manifest before it and with it—Thou the Sovereign, the All-Powerful, the Self-Sufficient, from Whose knowledge nothing is hidden. Verily, Thou art the All-Informed, the Subtle.
O my God, make my state, through the perpetuity of the might of Thy Essence, this very state wherein I behold none save Thee and say: “Praise be to God, the Lord of all the worlds.”
On the Night of Power (Laylat al-Qadr)
In the Name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate
Praise be to God, Who sendeth down the Command upon whom He willeth among His servants. Hallowed and exalted is He! He knoweth what descendeth from heaven and what occurreth upon earth, and what men have wrought in the Religion of God.
O my God! This is the Night whose primacy the Tablet cannot reckon; in it alone do the Spirit and the angels descend; and in it alone is any affair ordained for anyone. I beseech Thee, O God, by Thy bounty, to send Thy peace upon Thy Proof, the son of Thy Proof—the One Who standeth by Thy command, veiled from Thy servants—Thy Light, Whom Thou didst create for Thine own Self, elect for Thy guardianship, choose for Thy sovereignty, select for Thy good-pleasure, strengthen by the Holy Spirit from Thy command, and appoint in the station of Muhammad, Thy Messenger—may Thy blessings be upon him and his kindred—in delivery and decree, in fore-ordainment and execution, in term and in bada’ (the mysterious bringing-to-pass).
And that the fulfillment of Thy Will, in its execution, is not to be conceived as conjoined with the making of things; for ever hast Thou been exalted above being characterized by the highest essences of origination. Verily, Thou art the All-Powerful, the All-Bountiful.
O God, send down upon him in that blessed Night that whereby Thou art worthy, at the time of bestowal—of Thy ancient effulgences, Thy wondrous manifestations, Thy manifest breezes, Thy hidden signs, and whatsoever Thy knowledge hath encompassed and Thy Book hath recorded—none having access thereto save Thee—by Thy grace and bounty, O Thou Possessor of munificence and bestowal.
O God, through his power do Thou grant us victory; by his sovereignty do Thou exalt us; encompass us, by reason of his station, with the angels of the heavens and the earth; bring nigh, O God, his days; make firm our hearts through his signs; and succor us through his supplications. For we, indeed, find none but Thee able to accomplish what we ask and desire from Thee, and none besides Thee a refuge from that which we fear and dread of Thy justice.
O God, inscribe for us on that Night, by Thy irrevocable decree—against which there is no repulse—that which Thou lovest, through Thy Proof: such as will rejoice his eyes, by Thy grace and Thy bounty, O Most Generous of the generous and Most Bountiful of the bountiful. For we, verily, say: Praise be to God, the Lord of all the worlds.
On the Night of the Breaking of the Fast
In the Name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate
Praise be to God Who forgiveth whom He willeth, and chastiseth whom He willeth, and bestoweth sovereignty upon whom He willeth, and withholdeth authority from whom He willeth, as He willeth. Glorified and exalted is He Who commandeth justice and loveth grace, and forbiddeth evil and is not pleased with unbelief in anyone, and Who ordaineth kindness and forgiveness for the believers that perchance men may believe in His signs.
O my God! I bear witness unto Thy Being, even as Thou hast borne witness unto Thyself from time immemorial, without the testimony of any among the created things, that Thou art God, there is no God but Thee, the Mighty, the Powerful, the All-Bountiful. And I bear witness unto Thy Messenger, the unlettered Arabian, and unto Thy Prophet, the Hashimite of Batha, unto whom Thou hast made the excellence of Thy Self, and His justice the justice of Thy power, and His wisdom the wisdom of Thy Will, and His command the decree of Thy Purpose, and His manifestation the dayspring of the essence of Thy creation, and the secret of His being the vestures of the beauty of Thy holy mercy, and the bounty of His origin the munificence of Thy glorious generosity, and the attributes of His glorious servitude the examples of Thy holy dominion, and that which Thy knowledge hath encompassed in His conditions the examples of the manifestations of Thy self-subsistence, and in His signs the revelations of the holy appearance of Thy eternality, and in His stations the breezes of the glory of Thy oneness, and in His evidences the signs of Thy divinity, and that which Thou hast ordained for Him as Thou hast loved for Thyself. Verily Thou art the Mighty, the Gracious.
And I bear witness unto His successors, Thy blessings be upon them, according to that which Thou hast ordained for them in the knowledge of the unseen. Verily Thou art the Generous, the Most High.
O my God! Bless this Festival for us through Thy grace, and forgive us through Thy bounty, and turn unto us through Thy mercy. Verily Thou art the Generous, the Merciful.
