BB00399: Letter to the Hanafi Imam
In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful
This is a Book which hath been sent down by the leave of thy Lord from one all-wise. Then have its verses been expounded by thy Lord’s leave upon a straight path. And verily it is upon the path of God in the heavens and on earth—the verses have been sent down unto thee in clear Arabic without any crookedness.
O people of the city! Fear God Who created you, then sustained you, then giveth you life, then causeth you to die, then unto Him shall ye be gathered. Know that the proof of your Lord hath sent down His Word as verses on parchment according to the ordinance of the verses of the Qur’an that ye may be guided by the signs of God.
Say: O people of the city! Follow God’s command if it be Him ye worship. Verily your Lord is God, Creator of all things. There is no God but He. He hath expounded the ordinances of this Book in the Furqan aforetime that ye might believe in the meeting with God. God beareth witness unto the wrongdoers naught but the word of partnership. God shall judge between all with justice on the Day of Resurrection, and thy Lord wrong not His servants.
Whoso believeth in God and His signs and followeth the ordinance of this Book is indeed guided, and whoso strayeth, strayeth only against his own soul. And God thy Lord is independent of all the worlds. Fear God and associate not aught with worship of thy Lord, for God forgiveth not that any soul should associate partners with the successors of Muhammad, the Apostle of God, the Seal of the Prophets, and the word of punishment hath been decreed against him in truth. God sufficeth as a Reckoner and Witness against thee.
This is God’s ordinance in His Book and whoso transgresseth the command of thy Lord shall find none to help him on the Day of Judgment. And verily for all upon the path there shall be with thy Lord a station where they shall be questioned. Should all men gather to produce the like of a single verse from the verses of that Book, they would never be able, though they should aid one another. And verily God your Lord, the Merciful, there is no God but He, hath been witness over all things.
If thou follow the ordinance, convey the command of the Book unto the people of Mecca and those round about it, and warn them of thy Lord’s punishment, for God’s appointed time shall come and God’s command shall be fulfilled. This is Our remembrance from the Remembrance of God unto thee that thou associate not any with the worship of thy Lord.
And know that God thy Lord created no people but He raised up among them one of their own selves to teach them the Book and wisdom and purify them and guide them to a straight path. God sufficeth, and He Who sent down the verses from one exalted, as a witness. Glory be to God, Lord of the Throne, above what they describe. And peace be upon the Messengers. And praise be to God, Lord of the worlds.
